Thinking I had reached the final destination on my path to purpose, as described in “From Mountains to Medicine,” I enthusiastically dove headlong into my studies in medical school, followed by a residency in family medicine. Along the way, I gradually began noticing that some aspects of mainstream medicine defied common sense and critical thinking, and they were not in alignment with my values.
I suppressed the little voice inside that had guided my life choices up until then. The little voice said, “This form of medicine is not your path.” I paid no attention. Instead, the excitement of being in medical school, along with my competitive nature, propelled me to excel and be a top-notch student.
After ten years of practicing mainstream medicine, disaster struck and derailed my life, just as the Navajo grandmother had prophesied. The disaster served as a portal to the most meaningful life I could have ever imagined.
I will share with you the final episode of the search for purpose in my next memoir. Stay tuned!
